Mr. Raymar called the meeting to order at 8:05 AM
Mr. Raymar discussed meeting dates and times. Mondays and Wednesdays are best…No Day 3- Band for student members. Meetings to be held @ 8:00 AM.
Mr. Raymar welcomed all members to the first meeting. The group introduced themselves to each other.
Lynn Woods is a TA at Covert and a parent member in the Oceanside School District. Mr. Raymar indicated that there will be a different scribe and facilitator each meeting.
Test scores in RVC are high so we don't have to use Compact Meetings to increase test scores like other districts may do.
"Covert Kids Get Fit- Exercise Your Mind and Body" is a year long approach looking at physical fitness and our School Theme for the 09-10 school year.
"Go Green" headed by Marcia Richmond will be continued this year.
Drop off and pick up needs to be addressed. One of the things happening right now is one parent has become involved with a politician to get Willow Street to become a one way street. Congressman Santino will be working with our parents. Lynn Woods wanted to know if there was a better way to drop children off in the morning. A few schools have a safety drop off zone where you cannot park. Amount of people not an issue, cones may aid in congestion. Maybe signage is the answer. Will it cause congestion on Long Beach Road? Why can't we look into having buses only in front of Covert suggested Susan Buckheit. The group is brainstorming ideas for alternate routes for drop off and pick up in the AM and PM at Covert school. Short term fix is signs and cones. Mr. Raymar wants to go see a few schools to see different models in action. Mr. Raymar would like to go to number 2 school in Oceanside. In addition, Mr. Raymar is sending out another reminder to parents and student members Mitchell Koenig and Brandon Stein are going to each class to talk with students about this problem, so they can remind their parents to follow the rules. Cindy Marasco would like to reinstate the safety patrol. Cindy Marasco and Paula Lake will head up the safety patrol.
Regina Loftus mentioned that parents should not be allowed to park in the faculty parking lot after school to prevent jam ups. Mr. Raymar will go outside to the parking lot at the end of the day for several days to continue to remind parents not to use the parking lot.
Marcia Richmond has set up a Sneaker Drive. Recycling should not be in place of handing down sneakers. Some kids are bringing sneakers that are still wearable. We need help with the juice containers. Capri Sun containers need to be sent in huge quantities and rinsed before sending out. Mrs. Koenig will aid and assist. Aveda is collecting lids for recycling. A garden is needed for Covert. Garden Subcommittee will be Buckheit, Richmond, Gilligan, Koenigs, Deninno, Levy and Ross Marasco. Tanglewood Preserve may help. Mrs. Richmond was told to contact Wilson and find out who was in charge of writing the Education Foundation Grant for Greenhouse.
Mr. Raymar has been thinking about offering an incentive to all kids and teachers who volunteer for a day at a pantry. A list of pantries should be handed out so people know where to go. Mrs. Buckheit is interested in project. Linus to create blankets for needy families. Mrs. Buckheit will bring more information to the next meeting. Use Raymar Children's Fund money to do projects.
