  !!!!!!!HAZING!!!!!!!!

Dear Parents and Students:

Hazing is one of the many covert violence issues confronting schools today. When it comes to the safety of our students, we can't be over prepared. As a community with great pride and tradition, I ask for your help and pledge my vigilance in making sure that this will never occur in Rockville Centre. Together, we can accomplish this.

Very truly yours,

Carol Roseto

Director of Physical Education, Health and Athletics

THE ROCKVILLE CENTRE PUBLIC SCHOOLS AND SOUTH SIDE ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT DO NOT CONDONE ANY PRACTICE OF HAZING. THOSE THAT VIOLATE THIS POLICY WILL BE SUBJECT TO STRICT DISCIPLINARY ACTIONS.

HAZING POLICY

WILL BE DISCUSSED WITH ALL ATHLETIC TEAMS DURING THE FIRST WEEK OF PRACTICE

HAZING POLICY

Hazing at any age can be exceedingly harmful.  Hazing at the Middle School or High School levels are particularly troubling because the developmental stages of adolescence create a situation in which students are more vulnerable to peer pressure.  This is due to the tremendous need for belonging, making friends and finding approval in one's peer group.

Hazing is defined as any action taken or situation created intentionally to produce a mental or physical discomfort, embarrassment, harassment or ridicule.  While initiation rights have a number of positive objectives such as promoting group tradition, fostering a sense of belonging and making the new person seem special, hazing goes beyond the limit. Hazing is not about "traditions" or "silly antics".  It is about the abuse of power and the violation of human dignity and is a form of victimization.

Hazing activities may include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Participation in morally degrading or humiliating games and activities which are not consistent with school district regulation and policies.
  • Forcing the new participants to go out in public wearing conspicuous apparel that is not considered to be in good taste.
  • Engaging the students in public stunts and buffoonery as a mandatory requirement.
  • Forced consumption of alcohol.
  • Taking part in ongoing activities that create excessive fatigue.
  • Giving or receiving any physical or psychological shocks.
  • Being part of any scavenger hunt that creates the necessity to display inappropriate behavior and/or break the law in order to succeed.

SUBLTE HAZING :  Actions that are against accepted school district standards of conduct, behavior and good taste.  Any activity or attitude directed towards a student which ridicules, humiliates or embarrasses.

HARRASSMENT HAZING :  Anything that causes mental anguish or physical discomfort to the student. Any activity which confuses, frustrates, or causes undue stress.
